China's demand for pulpwood is still increasing. Vietnam is still the main supplier of China's pulpwood

March 13, 2023
According to statistics, about four fifths of the world's Wood Chip trade each year is hardwood chips, which are mainly shipped to the Asian market. In the past 10 years, with the expansion of China's pulp production capacity and the lack of domestic wood fiber, it can be said that China is the main force driving the global wood chip trade.

In 2022, affected by the high global inflation and the closure of the domestic epidemic, the orders of China's timber industry were forced to decrease significantly, and the market environment was not optimistic. However, according to the recent report, the hardwood chips imported by China in 2022 increased by 18.8% (2.78 million tons) year on year. Vietnam is still the main source of Chinese wood chip import.

Wood chip import in 2022

Vietnam: The amount of wood chips from Vietnam increased by 18.5% year-on-year to 10.532 million tons.
Australia: The amount of wood chips from Australia increased by 25.8% year-on-year to 3.175 million tons.
Thailand: Although the amount of wood chips from Thailand is less than that of Vietnam, it has nearly doubled year on year.
Chile: The amount of wood chips from Chile has decreased.

2023 market forecast

In 2023, under the new epidemic prevention and control policy, the situation of the Chinese market will improve, and with the development of the pulp industry, China's demand for wood chips will not decrease.
In the three years since the outbreak of the epidemic, the number of wood chips exported from Vietnam to China has been steadily increasing, so Vietnam is expected to remain the main market for Chinese wood chip imports in 2023.
In February of this year, nearly 2.7 million hectares of forest land in Chile was burned, and many local wood processing plants were forced to shut down. It is expected that Chile's wood chips exported to China this year will continue to decline, and Brazil's eucalyptus chips may replace Chile's market share.
